SIG Beyond at Indian Hill School: Academics
Academics
Each class will run for 10 weeks. Students can sign up for the course of their choice. In addition to courses, students will engage in additional
activities that support their many and varied needs beyond academic ones. During the 10 week period, students would engage two times in
each of the following activities:
Creative Thinking Activity | Social Event | Research Skills Activity | Current Events Analysis | Community Problem Activity
Community Problem Solving Is bullying a problem in your school? Do you often see garbage on the ground and graffiti on buildings? Is the cost of public transportation making it difficult to get around the city? In this course students will identify a real-life problem in their community and develop a plan to address the concern such as creating a recycling or anti-bullying campaign. It will challenge students to apply their imagination and thinking skills to some of the significant issues facing both their community and the world. They will learn how to predict, understand and solve problems associated with these issues, helping them to have a positive impact on society.
Cunning Camouflage In the animal world, the easiest way to avoid being eaten is to avoid being seen. There are innumerable examples in nature such as the chameleon, the zebra, and the stick insect. In the world of humans, camouflage has played an increasing role in the military. Camouflage is now popular in our modern culture as fine art and fashion. This course will examine how camouflage is used to hide and deceive in multiple contexts for various purposes. Students will design a new camouflage product and assess their need to stand out or be “camouflaged” in their lives.
Mysteries in History The great, unsolved mysteries of the past continue to intrigue us today. From Amelia Earhart’s disappearance, to the Kennedy assassination to the Lindbergh kidnapping, you’ll have a chance to explore the evidence to determine what really happened in these cases. Using primary sources, secondary sources, literature of the period, and good research techniques, students will pursue individual projects as well as hold a trial to determine who was really responsible for one of the great historical mysteries.
Sports Statistics Are you a sports fanatic? Do you live for March Madness, the World Series or the World Cup? Do you ever wonder how player stats are calculated? In this class students are given the opportunity to investigate the sport of their choice, accessing statistics through newspapers, surveys and the internet, and presenting their findings in a mode of their choice. Investigate the role of sports statisticians in the sports, business, and newspaper industry and plan your future as a leader at an organization of sports statisticians and historians, such as the Elias Sports Bureau.
