How can American education improve its preparation of today's students for tomorrow's world?

by James, Grade 5, Age 11, from Marietta, GA

There are many ways that American education can improve its preparation of today’s students for tomorrow’s world, and many opinions on how to do this. Some people think that schools should have healthier food or longer classes. Those things will help kids, but I think that the most important things that you can teach kids is how to work for themselves, be more culturally diverse, have good communication skills, be environmentally friendly and live a healthy lifestyle.

Why is it important to own your own business you ask well, if you own your own business then you have more control over how much money you earn and you know that you wont get fired the next day in other words you have stability. By teaching kids to work for themselves they would be able to contribute to the economy and there would be fewer people living on the street and in shelters.

One time my teacher said that I think globally. As a person who thinks globally I worry about what will happen in the world tomorrow rather than what happened in my city today. Kids today have lots of chances to see more of the world because we use the Internet. We also learn about different cultures from the news and when we get older we will probably do more and more business with people from all over the world. Most kids still think about one little business in a little town but in the in the future lots of businesses in America will have employees in all different parts of the world. If more schools had cultural awareness days, kids could learn more about other cultures.

Teachers should also encourage students to be more environmentally friendly. They could do this in their everyday activities by recycling and using environmentally friendly products or they could have special earth days. On these days students could adopt a small pond and clean it up or plant trees.

In schools we should be taught good communication skills. Communication is very important because without it there would be total chaos. Lawmakers wouldn’t be able to get people to agree to new laws and people wouldn’t know how to talk to each other without hurting their feelings. Communication skills can be taught by allowing kids to express themselves in whatever way is best for them. This could be in speaking classes, writing classes or art. All of these things are important in expression.

Another thing that teachers should talk about more is living a good, healthy and respectable life. For this subject I could think of at least twenty diseases, say not to do them and my essay would be complete. But, that wouldn’t be interesting. We could cut out a lot of diseases by just eating right, exercising or doing things that are good for your body. These days it’s difficult to eat healthy because we are surrounded by unhealthy foods, but if schools could somehow expose kids to different types of foods, from different places kids will grow up and eat a variety of foods. I know that in my schools recess is being cut out of the curriculum, but I think recess is important because with out it out bodies can’t grow strong and we won’t be able to fight off infections.

In conclusion I’d like to say that, that American education could prepare today’s students for tomorrows world by teaching more cultural diversity, International economics, environmental friendliness, good communication skills and the best ways to live a healthy lifestyle.
