How can American education improve its preparation of today's students for tomorrow's world?

by Patricia, Grade 8, Age 14, from the Dominican Republic

It is the youth of the country that provides the prosperity of the future; therefore, American schools should reinforce education in the areas of foreign culture, language and politics.  Reinforcing these areas of education will most certainly improve the nation’s future, and prepare the students for tomorrow’s world. American schools do offer education of foreign culture, language and politics but it should be enforced because students are lacking knowledge of the existence of many countries which have influenced their country greatly.

Culture should be reinforced because it gives reasons why people act the way they do.  This knowledge will help students understand the world around them and therefore maintain peace with everyone.  This peace will prevent conflicts/wars and, therefore, many deaths.   By examining the critical thinking of people from distant places, students may help the development of a better society.  The students’ greatest benefit from learning about other cultures is what they might learn from others’ mistakes and/or successes.   Studying other cultures could help establish more international business and relations, in the future.

Language in American schools is taught but it can be improved, since, by the time that the students graduate, there is a vague memory of the foreign languages studied throughout the school years.  The student who has learned other languages and speaks/writes fluently, will most likely be preferred (academically) over the student who has simply studied the language but does not know how to communicate properly. Once grammar is taught, American schools should emphasize conversational skills.  Therefore, it would be better if each student learned his/her second or third language as early as possible because afterwards, the student will not learn as easily.  The most commonly spoken languages in the world today are: Chinese, English, Hindustani, and finally Spanish.  Some of these languages would be very difficult for small children to study, but if a student learns two or three of them, he/she would have a great advantage in the business world.

Even though politics is a very delicate subject, students could be taught a broad idea about politics around the world.  By learning more about foreign politics, the students have some knowledge of what their world is really like.  For example, the war in Iraq is still happening and the youth of the country is not well informed about it.  Studying other countries’ laws and rulings might help citizens improve their own nation, as well as understand others better.  Accordingly, if a student believes that any law of another country needs to be applied in his/her country, then, when that student becomes a voter, he/she could express the beliefs or even postulate himself/herself.

In conclusion, American education simply needs to be improved in foreign culture, language, and politics because the students will learn from others’ mistakes and/or successes.  It is necessary for human beings to understand the world around them in order to maintain peace and build for the future, which will delight Americans thoroughly.  In this way, the students will be more prepared for tomorrow’s world.
