Student Activities

A traditional week at SIG is a very busy week! From evening programs to entertainment to Saturday Get-Away Days, SIG provides students with exceptional recreational activities that are not only fun, but educational and stimulating as well. Students use knowledge they learn at SIG during recreational activities and programs. This comprehensive approach to learning and fun is what SIG is all about.

Recreational Hour & Evening Activities
Each day, Monday through Friday, there is a recreational hour after the last course period. During this hour, students may participate in activities such as swimming, tennis, basketball, volleyball, soccer, chess, and creative arts. Students may also choose to relax and hang out with friends. A different activity, supervised by a SIG staff member, may be chosen each day. Activities may vary by campus.

SIG’s evening activities provide students with unique and distinctive cultural, intellectual and recreational opportunities. Evening programs may include movie nights, counselor group activities, student theater performances and dances as well as:

  • Professional Performers
Students might see such acts as gymnasts, magicians, reptile shows, dancers, singers or improvisational groups.

  • The SIG Talent Show
Students can show off their distinctive talents such as singing a duet, playing a Beethoven sonata, giving a stand-up routine or performing a cultural dance.

  • The Brain Bowl
Students will compete in a game show setting to answer challenging trivia in Arts, History and Government, Geography, Literature, and Science and Technology. The Brain Bowl is the ultimate SIG challenge, combining both speed and intellect.

Weekend Programs

Saturday Get-Away Days: Off-campus trips are planned for the two Saturdays during the SIG session. These trips provide students with a great chance to explore the various attractions in the vicinity of their campus. Some of the previous years’ trips included the Harvard Museum of Natural History, Six Flags, California Science Aquarium, local city tours, professional baseball games, the Hayden Planetarium and theater shows.

Sunday Activity Day: On the Sunday following the first week of the program, students engage in a special on-campus Activity Day. The activity involves the entire summer program in social as well as intellectual engagement.

Parent Visitation Day: The final Sunday of the program is Parent Visitation Day. Parents may visit with their children and take them off campus. Parents have an opportunity to assess their children’s progress and achievement at SIG by meeting with faculty and staff. Students whose parents are unable to attend on visiting day are provided with recreational and social activities supervised by the staff.

Final Program: A final program is held on the last day of each session. Parents are encouraged to attend this special program, which recognizes and highlights student accomplishments. Certificates for successful completion of the SIG program are awarded at this event.
