Instructor – Investigators Program

Job Description

Reporting

This position reports to the Director and the Academic Dean (if applicable) of assigned campus.

Summary

The role of the Instructor for the Summer Institute for the Gifted Investigators Program is to implement the assigned SIG courses on campus and blend the course content with the needs of the students in the course. The role has a responsibility to ensure that students are appropriately challenged and that they produce outcomes that are personally relevant and significantly transformative.

Each SIG course is designed to employ a creative methodology in which the Instructor asks questions requiring students to think carefully about and research their responses; this questioning will determine the direction that the course takes. SIG courses should culminate in a final student presentation that requires the synthesis and evaluation of their newfound knowledge. The goal is to provide meaningful connections between student interests and the overarching course concepts. This type of methodology can be employed in every SIG course. SIG courses require thought and planning to execute, as well as flexibility on the part of the Instructor to take the course in different directions to meet the needs of the students.

Essential Functions

  1. Adheres to policies and procedures as outlined in the SIG Employee Handbook, SIG Academic Manual, and the SIG Code of Professional Conduct.
  2. Completes all Pre-Program responsibilities:
    • Reviews course outline and sets aside time for course planning to identify academic course questions and tentative supplies needed for the course.
    • Reviews webinars, training videos, and Instructor Manual and applies related content into course planning.
    • Attends and participates in pre-program staff orientation training and conference calls before student arrival.
  3. Develops a course plan using SIG’s Course Plan template to provide more details about instructional practices that are based on student pre-assessment results and course objectives. Course plans are submitted to the Director and/or Academic Dean (if applicable) during week 1 of the program.
  4. Submits a Budget Approval Form after review of program inventory, course outline guidelines, and orientation training plans, to the Director and/or Academic Dean (if applicable).
  5. Completes Instructor Budget Reimbursement Form for any reimbursement requests.
  6. Implements individualized daily instruction based upon the unique abilities of each student providing for an appropriate, intellectually stimulating academic environment.
  7. Helps each student to create an individual objective for the class that is aligned with course objectives and student interests and creates an individualized Instructor objective for each student within the first three days of class.
  8. Supports student learning goals toward the creation of a culminating product for the course that addresses student and course objectives.
  9. Submits a Summary of Student and Instructor Objectives Form to Director and/or Academic Dean (if applicable).
  10. Communicates issues regarding the students’ academic progress to site leadership.
  11. Sets-up a classroom management system that allows all students to work at their best and respect the work and learning spaces of others.
  12. Monitors, counsels, and coaches inappropriate behavior of students in the academic setting.
  13. Communicates continued issues and any absenteeism/tardiness to site leadership.
  14. Attends all Instructor meetings for the program, including orientation and faculty meetings.
  15. Communicates with parents, as needed.
  16. Utilizes Program Assistants in the classroom and in daily lesson execution and activities.
  17. Constructs final, academic assessments called Student Performance Reviews (SPR) of each student during the last week of the program. SPRs are to be appropriate in tone, detail, and personalization, as well as mechanically and grammatically.
  18. Actively works on, corrects, and revises Student Performance Reviews (SPR) until final approval, which may occur after the end of the academic program.
  19. Attends the Closing Ceremony on the last day of the session.
  20. Sets up Product Showcase of students’ culminating products for parents to attend after Closing Ceremony on the last day of the program.
  21. Performs additional duties as assigned.

  1. Demonstrate experience with and knowledge of the academic, social, and emotional needs of gifted students.
  2. Be able to interact, communicate, and present oneself in a professional manner.
  3. Provide positive leadership through sharing and demonstrating academic knowledge, promotes teamwork, and a visionary perspective in instruction.
  4. Complete the planning and research for course preparation outside of class time.
  5. Be able to work and anticipate unexpected situations or assist during emergency operations.
  6. Work with various office equipment including, but not limited to: cell phones, walkie-talkies, computers, recreational equipment, photo copiers, fax machines, or scanners.

Work Environment

This job operates at a day college campus for a three-week period.

Physical Demands

  1. Ability to move, or push objects by using hands and arms to install or position materials up to 40 lbs.
  2. Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, and crawl for prolonged periods of time to perform general operations.
  3. Be able to demonstrate speech clarity and recognition by speaking frequently for long periods of time to students, parents, faculty, and SIG staff while conveying detailed and important information.
  4. Monitor the health and safety of others by scanning large areas at both night and during the day.
  5. Ability to work potentially without air conditioning during hot and humid summer months for days on campus.
  6. Maintain constant contact with others by interacting with staff and students and within the campus and campus facilities.

Position Type / Expected hours of work / Travel

  1. This role is required to be at the assigned campus during assigned course periods, Monday through Friday, and to attend weekly faculty meeting.
  2. There are additional pre- and post-camp responsibilities related to course planning and student evaluations.
  3. The position is required to attend staff orientation one or two Saturdays before the start of the assigned program.
  4. This role is expected to commute to and from program location daily.

Education / Experience/ Qualifications

  1. A minimum of a Master’s degree (preferred).
  2. A minimum of three years lead or independent teaching experience.
  3. Possesses specialized understanding in the subject and content area of the courses selected to instruct.
